Eagle County Airport, Colorado

Eagle County Airport is quietly tucked away off of I-70 in Gypsum, accommodating commercial air flights and providing space for the Vail Valley Jet Center.  Only 35 miles from Vail, Eagle serves skiers at Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge.  Eagle is also home base to the Colorado Army National Guard’s High Altitude Aviation Training Site, where rotary wing military pilots from all over the world are trained.

The Apron Reconstruction & Infield Area Improvements project included 30,943 SY of 16.5” and 2,356 SY of 12” Portland Cement Concrete Pavement.  The project also incorporated P-306 Econocrete, unclassified excavation, underdrain, and P-154 subbase.  Additional work improved the Stormwater Infrastructure System, including the installation of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and aircraft rated inlet structures.  Accompanying electrical system upgrades were performed, including the addition of LED taxiway edge lights.

The project was broken into two schedules and six phases to accommodate aircraft movement and holiday weekends.  This included the completion of Schedule I prior to Independence Day weekend, and Phases III, IV, and IVa prior to Labor Day weekend.  Requested by the Airport, this allowed the Airport to utilize the newly constructed apron for aircraft parking associated with the heavy holiday traffic and minimized disruptions to airport operations.   During these holiday weekends, IHC reduced their construction limits footprint on the apron significantly in order to provide the Airport with the most space for aircraft parking.
